Simone LeAmon Australian artist-designer is a creative force blurring the lines between artistic and commercial product design. Recognised for developing conceptually rich perimeters for product design and one-off exhibition works Simone's designs are wonderfully evocative, reinstating the role of story-telling through process and material.
Simone graduated in sculpture from Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne in 1993 staging numerous solo exhibitions in Australia and Italy in the ensuing years. During this time Simone worked for Australian jeweller and design luminary Susan Cohn at Workshop 3OOO honing her skills in serial production and developing a healthy interdisciplinary attitude and interest in the transgressive potential of design. Between 1999-2OO3 Simone was a founding partner in n+1 equals interdisciplinary studio in Melbourne delivering projects in the diverse fields of public art, landscape architecture, jewellery and fashion. Following a coveted studio residency at Viafarini, Milan in 2OO1 and travels through Europe, Japan and the USA Simone commenced studies in industrial design at RMIT University receiving a masters in design in 2OO4.
Establishing a reputation for highly individualistic projects Simone launched her own studio in Melbourne in 2OO5 O.S INITIATIVE now Simone LeAmon P/l. A company that reflects the full diversity of her artistic and commercial practice. In collaboration with business, design professionals and craft practitioners, Simone markets a portfolio of design propositions, communication strategies and entrepreneurial responses in conversation with contemporary issues for clients, collaborators and the Simone LeAmon design catalogue. All the work developed draws on her expansive erudition in the visual arts, product design and critical theory. Passionate about fostering creative dialogues Simone LeAmon draws on the sense of place, wit and sustainability concerns that are integral to our daily lives.
Between 2OO7-2O1O Simone was appointed the inaugural creative director for Planex, Australia’s leading high-design manufacturer of commercial storage and accessories. Representing one of the most historic names in Italian lighting design and manufacture Simone holds the position of Oluce design ambassador for Australasia. A protagonist in furthering the improvement and visibility of Australian design Simone currently bloggs for howwecreate.com.au, writes a regular column for Indesign magazine and lectures in the University department of industrial design at RMIT.
Simone has developed concepts and product designs for lighting, furniture, interior accessories, graphics, motorcycle apparel, fashion and jewellery. Simone's inclusion in the 2OO7 publication &fork by Phaidon Press, UK identified her as one of the world’s most exciting up-and-coming designers. in 2OO9 Simone was the recipient of one of the most coveted accolades in Australian design – the Cecily and Colin Rigg Contemporary Design Award for design excellence in seating, presented by the National Gallery of Victoria.
